Brunch can never truly be complete without a giant stack of pancakes in the middle of the table for everyone to share (or just for you to eat yourself…).
You know the typical American breakfast with sweet fluffy pancakes filled with blueberries and topped with bananas or chocolate chips and plenty of butter and maple syrup… Well, if you find yourself in Barcelona then one of the best decisions you’ll make during your stay will be to try out one of these delicious pancake-serving spots! There are more and more places popping up in town that make delicious pancakes – here are our 5 favourites…
Alsur café
Alsur Café is very popular among residents and visitors alike in Barcelona. It is an inviting and quirky place to meet with friends, study or simply stop for a cup of coffee and a snack. With different sites around town, you can choose which you prefer – the one in the centre of El Born with an outdoor terrace or perhaps the one nestled opposite the Palau de la Música with comfy sofas where you can spend all day lounging and nibbling on their delicacies. Alsur Café serves a variety of sweet and salty foods like sandwiches, salads, bagels, and delicious cakes, pastries and of course, pancakes. Every dish is packed with colour and interesting ingredients and their buttermilk pancakes are simply to die for. Deliciously fluffy and filled with chocolate chips and banana, they are like pillows of heaven. If that weren’t enough, when we tell you they’re stacked high and topped with butterscotch sauce, you’ll be running out the door to get yourself a plate! Their slogan, Lo Que Quieras Cuando Quieras (meaning What you Want, When You Want), is pretty bang on we’d say!

Brunch & Cake
Brunch & Cake is the perfect location to spend a sunny lazy afternoon. The casual restaurant is open every day of the week from 9am to 9pm so you can get your pancake fix at all hours of the day. So contrary is this hangout that the website even says: “Salad for breakfast? Pancakes for dinner? Here, anything is possible.” That second part is all you need to hear. What could be better than pancakes for dinner? Their philosophy is to make everything as natural as possible and handmade from scratch to give customers the very best quality food possible. Their pancakes are proof of that homemade touch they pride themselves on with their cooking. Made with ricotta to make them super rich yet moist and light, these pancakes are topped with fruit, honey, jam, chocolate AND cream! Plus, you can choose to add anything else of your fancy! Fortunately, Brunch & Cake has five different locations so you can try their delicious pancakes all over the city! A note of caution, though, they don’t take reservations, so be prepared to wait a little at the weekend … (you won’t regret it!)

Milk Bar & Bistro Restaurant
Since its opening in 2005 by Irish expats, Milk Bar & Bistro Restaurant has become a popular spot for cocktails during the day and night. But Milk goes beyond its drinks and offers a scrumptious brunch menu with a variety of different foods like burgers, salads, eggs, bagels, and, of course, pancakes. They make double fluffy pancakes and pair them with fruit or bacon, Greek yogurt, and maple syrup. Inside, the restaurant has comfortable couches with pillows, chandeliers, and mirrors that blend in with their colourful retro surroundings.
The recovery brunch is just one of Milk’s strong selling points. Available daily until 4pm, this restaurant was one of the first in Barcelona to nail down the breakfast menu with their American style brunch. So, if you’ve indulged in the Barcelona nightlife head to Milk Bar & Bistro for their famous recovery lunch the next day.

Can Dendê
Can Dendê is a young and family-friendly place in Poblenou that prides itself on its brunch, offering just about everything. Get there early, because it may be a long wait for their pancakes. You can choose from savoury or sweet. If banana, mixed wild berries, syrup and cream isn’t out-of-the-ordinary enough for you, then perhaps you’d like to try the eggs Benedict pancakes or even the topping of pulled pork and spring onion! Its style is trendy and urban (as are many places in the Poble Nou neighbourhood) and its inviting space features exposed high ceilings, big windows, polished concrete floors, and a very welcoming vibe (particularly due to the friendly staff!).
Truth be told, it is a bit off the beaten path and not in the most attractive street of this lovely neighbourhood, however the atmosphere and of course the food that are definitely worth the visit!

Firebug
Passeig de San Joan is becoming the city’s foodie heaven with many great brunch places to choose from. Firebug is most definitely one of them! The bar has a cosy and bright interior with many windows that allow plenty of light in during the day. It also has a huge terrace on the broad pedestrianised area at the front, where you can enjoy your brunch in the sun.
The menu is very diverse and has a lot of dishes that are great for sharing. The pancakes, however, are out of this world. Try their Penny Farthing pancakes with banana, walnuts, Greek yogurt and maple syrup. All their dishes are a work of art and very filling. Firebug is also a great place to go to at night. Owned by the same people as Milk, you can expect the same high quality of cocktails and buzzing atmosphere. Whether you prefer the classics, or would rather try something new, the cocktail menu is extensive and delicious. Day or night, you can’t go wrong…
