During your trip to Barcelona, the choice of things to do is absolutely endless. From admiring Gaudí’s masterpieces to spending a day at one of the beautiful beaches, visitors to this Mediterranean hotspot will never be bored! However, for those who wish to add a little adventure to their trips, especially when coming to the city with family, a visit to the Barcelona Zoo makes for a great day out.
Explore the depths of Africa, discover the hidden treasures of the Asian rainforest and make eye contact with the King of the Jungle. Visitors to Barcelona Zoo can travel across the whole world without leaving the city.
The Parc de la Ciutadella, situated in the city center, is the beautiful setting for the “Parc Zoològic de Barcelona”, most famously known as the home of the only ever identified albino gorilla, Snowflake, until he passed away in 2003. Read on to find out why you should make a trip to this wonderful animal kingdom.
Experience the Wonders of Wildlife
Founded in 1892, the Barcelona Zoo is both one of the oldest and most modern zoos in the world and houses over 7000 animals! Home to a range of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, there are many weird and wonderful animals to be seen here. From hippopotamuses and Komodo dragons to monkeys and a Cuban crocodile, visitors will be impressed by the sheer range of different species (over 400!) throughout their journey through nature.
With an endless amount of animals to be seen, whatever your age or interest, there is something for everyone at the Barcelona Zoo. From the lovable penguins and colorful toucans to the roaring lions and stomping elephants, plus a dolphin show, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained for an entire day. Be sure not to miss a crowd favorite: the Red Panda!
Something Different
Barcelona Zoo sets itself apart from the others in the country with its open enclosures. This allows visitors to come almost face to face with their favorite species. In December 2012, a natural habitat was recreated for the hippopotamuses, with a viewing area over a balcony allowing visitors to see this incredible animal up close.
Not only is the Barcelona Zoo a tourist attraction, but it is also committed to the research and protection of species in danger of extinction and is expected to become an essential player in Barcelona’s biodiversity conservation policies. Visitors to the zoo can see the pride it takes in the humane facilities and habitats it provides for the animals.
Special Attractions
A popular area to visit at the Zoo is the Farm, also known as the Children’s Zoo. With pigs, cows, sheep and donkeys, the farm is a great opportunity for kids to get up close and personal with the animals – and they can even ride ponies! This area is fantastic for younger visitors with various activities at the weekends including clowns and face painting.
How to get to the Zoo
The Barcelona Zoo is easily accessible from the metro stop Arc de Triomf (L1). The zoo is open from 10am-5pm in the winter, but during the summer it remains open until 8pm. Tickets can be bought online or at the gate, with adult tickets costing around 19.90€, and children getting in for around 11.95€.
