11 Best Ways to Spend a Rainy day in Barcelona

When someone says Barcelona, your mind typically goes to sunshine, beaches, parks, and outdoor activities. But even the Catalan capital gets its share of rainy days! Thankfully, a little bit of bad weather won’t get in the way of your sightseeing plans. In fact, Barcelona has a wide variety of indoor activities to choose from, including fascinating museums, awe-inspiring modernist buildings, immersive experiences, cosy cafes and plenty of activities for families.

So, grab your umbrella and make the most of the city, whatever the weather!

1. Spend the Day Shopping

What better excuse is there for a bit of retail therapy, than a rainy day? Luckily Barcelona has several large shopping centres, where you can spend some time browsing through the shops, grabbing a bite to eat, and most importantly on a rainy day, staying warm and dry!

Las Arenas de Barcelona, next to Plaça d’Espanya is one of the most distinctive shopping centres. It occupies a former bullring and is the home to a large number of shops, restaurants and varied entertainment options.

Another popular choice is Maremagnum, located beside Port Vell. Its waterfront location makes it especially convenient if you are already exploring the city centre, making it perfect to run into if there’s an unexpected change in weather!

2. Discover Barcelona’s Museums

Few activities are better suited to a rainy day than exploring a museum, and Barcelona definitely has plenty of them.

If you’re an art lover, you can spend a few hours discovering the work of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, at the Picasso museum located in El Born.

For something different, the Moco museum Barcelona combines both modern and contemporary art, with colourful digital and immersive installations. They boast a collecting including internationally recognised names, alongside contemporary artists, making it particularly accessible for those who don’t typically enjoy traditional museums.

On Montjuïc, you will find two museums; the National Art Museum of Catalunya (MNAC) and the Fundació Joan Miró, giving you plenty of opportunities to turn a grey afternoon into an interesting, cultural one.

Tip: If you have your eyes set on a particular museum, it would be well worth checking the website for its opening hours, and tickets.

3. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

What could be better than escaping the rain and spending a few hours relaxing?

Barcelona has an incredible selection of spas and wellness centres, ranging from luxurious hotel spas to thermal baths and massage centres. Spend the afternoon moving between warm pools, steam rooms, and relaxation areas while watching the rain fall outside.

A spa day is an especially good option after busy days of sightseeing- giving yourself a chance to relax, and recharge for the days that follow, and the bad weather gives you a perfect excuse to slow down for a few hours.

4. Step Into the Sagrada Família

Blue skies are definitely not a necessity when it comes to appreciating Barcelona’s most famous landmark.

The interior of the Sagrada Família is one of the most amazing sights in the city, with soaring columns, intricate architectural details, and colourful stained-glass windows transforming the light inside.

As the Sagrada Família is one of Barcelona’s most popular attractions, it is strongly reccomended that you book your tickets online in advance.

5. Warm up in a Cosy Café

Sometimes the best rainy-day plan is also the simplest. Barcelona has a thriving café scene, so you can easily find somewhere warm, order a coffee or a hot chocolate and watch the rain through the window.

Neighborhoods such as Grácia, Eixample, El Born and Sant Antoni are packed with independent, local-owned cafés and bakeries, where you can easily spend an hour taking a break and wait for the worst of the weather to pass.

In the mood for something more traditional? Use the opportunity to try a cup of thick Spanish-style hot chocolate with churros– particularly satisfying when the weather refuses to cooperate.

6. Explore the Barcelona Aquarium

Travelling with children? The Aquarium in Barcelona is one of the easiest ways to turn a rainy day into a fun adventure. Located in Port Vell, the aquarium is almost entirely indoors and takes you through Mediterranean and tropical marine life and ecosystems.

One of its biggest attractions is the giant Oceanarium, which visitors cross through an underwater tunnel, while sharks, rays, and other marine species swim overhead.

The aquarium is open 365 days a year, making it an especially reliable option when you suddenly need to change your plans because of the weather.

7. Watch a Film at the Cinema

After several days of sightseeing, there is nothing wrong with kicking back, relaxing, and spending a rainy afternoon at the cinema.

Barcelona has plenty of cinemas showing international releases. Worried you won’t understand the screenings? No need to worry- many films are screened in their original language, with Spanish subtitles. You can identify this by ‘VOSE’– original language, with Spanish subtitles, or ‘Doblada’– dubbed into Spanish.

It can be a great opportunity to experience a different side of everyday life in Barcelona, while staying completely dry. So grab some popcorn, settle into your seat, and forget about the weather for a couple of hours!

8. Step into Football with FC Barcelona

Football fans can use a rainy day to learn more about one of the most famous clubs in the world.

Since the transformation of the Spotify Camp Nou in recent years, the FC Barcelona visitor experience has changed considerably. So forget the old Camp Nou you may be familiar with. Now, visitors can walk through the club’s history, through the Barça museum and immersive visitor experiences, seeing their trophies, historic moments, and audiovisual installations.

With Spotify Camp Nou entering a new chapter, it would be worth checking the official FC Barcelona website before visiting to see which experiences and stadium-access options are available on your chosen date.

9. Take a Cooking Class

Enjoyed the Spanish food from your trip? Why not learn to make it yourself, so you can continue that holiday feeling, even after you arrive back home.

A rainy afternoon is an excellent opportunity to partake in one of Barcelona’s many cooking classes. Depending on the experience you choose, you could learn how to prepare paella, tapas, traditional catalan dishes, or even some Spanish desserts.

Many of these classes finish with everyone sitting down together, and enjoying the dishes made. This makes it a particularly fun option for couples, families, and friends.

Some experiences also include a trip to one of Barcelona’s food markets, giving you an introduction to local ingredients, and culinary traditions before you even start cooking.

And best of all, you’ll return home with a new skill, as well as memories from your trip.

10. Discover the Gaudí Houses

The Sagrada Família isn’t the only Gaudí masterpiece that is a perfect activity for a rainy day. Barcelona is home to several incredible buildings designed by the Catalan architect, and exploring their interiors gives you a completely different perspective on his work.

Casa Batlló, on Passeig de Gràcia is perhaps the most famous of the Gaudí buildings (other than the Sagrada Família of course). Inside, you will see flowing shapes, colourful tiles, unusual windows, and countless details inspired by the natural world.

Just a short walk away, La Pedrera – Casa Milà offers another fascinating look at Gaudí’s imagination, from its courtyards and attic to its famous rooftop.

You could also head to Casa Vicens  in Gràcia, Gaudí’s first major residential project and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

They’re three excellent ways to enjoy some of Barcelona’s most iconic architecture without spending the whole day outside.

Once again, be sure to check websites for tickets before arriving!

11. Immerse Yourself in an Exhibition

For something a little different from a traditional museum, Barcelona also has some fantastic immersive experiences.

IDEAL Centre d’Arts Digitals de Barcelona specialises in large-scale digital art, combining 360-degree projections, audiovisual installations and virtual reality to create experiences that completely surround the visitor.

Another fun option is IKONO Barcelona, an immersive experience where you’re encouraged to become part of the action. Located in the city centre, IKONO takes you through a series of colourful and interactive rooms, combining creative installations, unusual spaces and sensory experiences. Rather than simply looking at exhibits, you can explore, interact and take plenty of fun photos along the way.

Just a 5-minute walk from Plaça Catalunya, you will find the Illusion Museum Barcelona, filled with optical illusions and surprising visual effects designed to play tricks on your eyes and your perception. It’s a particularly fun option for families, couples, and groups of friends.

These three options are different from the traditional museum and are a perfect way to spend a rainy day, and interactive nature makes it a great place to take the kids!

Don’t let the rain stop you from exploring Barcelona! A little rain certainly doesn’t have to spoil anything. In fact, it could even be the perfect excuse to discover a completely different side of the city. From world class museums to immersive family-friendly attractions, and everything in between, there are plenty of things to do in Barcelona when it rains. Whatever the forecast, Barcelona always has something to offer.
