Barcelona is a city of endless discoveries, from its iconic architecture to its vibrant neighbourhoods. Yet just beyond the city lies a completely different landscape waiting to be explored. Less than an hour away, Montserrat offers dramatic mountain scenery, centuries of history and one of Catalonia’s most important religious sites, making it one of the best day trips from Barcelona. 

Escape to Montserrat Mountain 

The mountain’s main attraction is the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat. One of Catalonia’s most important religious sites, it attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world throughout the year. The abbey has played a significant role in Catalan history and culture, and served as a place of refuge for scholars, artists, politicians and students during Franco’s dictatorship. Montserrat is one of Catalonia’s most spectacular mountain landscapes and home to one of Europe’s most important monasteries. 

Rising to 1,236 metres above sea level, Montserrat offers spectacular panoramic views across the Catalan countryside. On exceptionally clear days, it is even said that the island of Mallorca can be seen from its highest peaks. Its extensive network of hiking trails makes it a paradise for walkers, with routes suitable for all experience levels. Beyond its striking landscape, Montserrat is also steeped in legend. According to local folklore, the mountain’s distinctive serrated peaks were carved by angels wielding golden saws, while geologists explain that the unique rock formations were shaped naturally over millions of years. 

The Tour: A Religious Experience Like No Other 

A tour through the abbey is a must, especially to see “La Moreneta”, or the Black Madonna. This statue has been guarded and protected by monks since the early 12th century. Pilgrims from all over the world come to Montserrat to touch the virgin’s golden orb with their left hand, while raising their right hand to show their respect to Jesus.  

Originally, La Moreneta was located in the Santa Cova (Holy Cave), around a 30–45-minute walk through the mountains. Though the original has now been moved to the monastery, a replica sits in her place inside the gorgeous cavern. 

While visiting the abbey, you may also have the opportunity to hear the Escolania de Montserrat (Montserrat Boys’ Choir), one of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe. Made up of around 30 boys, the choir combines academic studies with musical training and regularly sings during religious services at the monastery. After a tour through the monastery, Montserrat offers you the opportunity to take in the incredible views of Catalonia with Barcelona visible on clear days. If you are interested in walking or hiking, there are many different trails leading you to different vantage points on Montserrat. A few of these include a route down to the sacred cave, or up to the cross and more specifically, the Sant Jeroni hikes to the highest point and numerous hiking routes within the Montserrat Natural Park. 

Along the main avenue, local vendors sell traditional Catalan products such as mountain honey, local cheeses, and handmade souvenirs. At weekends, you’ll find a lively farmers’ market featuring products from the surrounding area. 

In addition, the Museum of Montserrat is a great place to visit. It features both permanent and temporary collections including the iconography of Santa Maria de Montserrat tracing the evolution of the depiction of the Virgin of Montserrat over time. 

It also has one of finest collections of Catalan paintings from prominent artists such as Fortuny, Rusiñol, Picasso and Dalí. 

An Easy Trip from Barcelona 

If you’re looking to escape the city for a day, Montserrat is one of the best excursions from Barcelona. Many people choose to stay in one of the many city center Barcelona apartments, and travel to and from the mountain in the same day. 

To get to Montserrat, you can easily take the train from Plaça de Espanya to the bottom of the mountain. Visitors can purchase a range of transport and attraction packages online, including the Trans Montserrat and Tot Montserrat tickets which you can find through this link which includes information on transport to and from Barcelona and a selection of tickets for visiting key buildings and monuments. 

Once you reach the bottom of the mountain, you can choose between the cable car and the rack-railway to get you to the top. 

To take the cable car: Get off the train from Barcelona at the Montserrat-Aeri stop, where you can transfer to the Aeri de Montserrat cable car which runs every 15 minutes. Follow this link to see the timetable and prices. 

To take the rack railway: Get off the train at the Monistrol de Montserrat stop (one stop after Montserrat-Aeri) and hop on the mountain train. Be sure to check the latest timetable to see departure and return times as well as any seasonal changes. 

Practical tips  

• Book your tickets in advance. 

• Check the weather before going, it can be quite windy all year round, so make sure to bring a light jacket. 

• Make sure to dress modestly or bring a cover up for entering the Basilica. 

• If you can, try visiting on a weekday as it is significantly less busy than weekends. 

• The Tran Montserrat and Tot Montserrat combo tickets should be collected in person at the Tourist Information Point Plaça Catalunya before your trip, they can be picked up the day before or on the day.
