Season 6 of the series was filmed more extensively in Spain than previous seasons, with Girona in particular used to shoot several scenes set in King’s Landing and Oldtown. Many of the scenes portraying Braavos were also filmed here. All of these locations are within easy walking distance and can be visited in just a few hours, leaving you the rest of the day to discover everything else Girona has to offer…

The Monastery of Girona – The Citadel of Oldtown

The Monastery of Girona (Sant Pere de Galligants) was used to portray the Citadel in Oldtown, where Samwell Tarly travels to train as a Maester, with Gilly and little Sam appearing in the scene.

The monastery dates back to the year 992 and was built by monks just outside Girona’s original city walls. Since 1857, it has housed the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia.

Plaça dels Jurats – Arya’s Theatre in Braavos

The scene in which Arya watches a play about her family’s lives and her father’s death in a square in Braavos was filmed in Plaça dels Jurats in Girona. Today, the square hosts local concerts and theatre performances, making it the perfect setting for this memorable scene.

Carrer del Bisbe Cartañà and the Onyar River Area – Braavos (Arya’s Stabbing Scene)

Before the theatre scene, Arya is sent to the square to assassinate Lady Crane, but instead she warns her about the Waif. As a result, the Waif stabs Arya in the stomach, and she attempts to escape by jumping from a bridge. This bridge is located between the Monastery of Girona and Plaça dels Jurats, along the banks of the Onyar River, making these three spots easy to visit in one go.

Carrer del Bisbe Cartañà – Streets of Braavos (Blind Arya & Training Scenes)

Most of Arya Stark’s scenes in Season 6 were filmed in the streets of Girona. For example, the moments when she is blind and forced to beg, as well as when she is chased by the Waif. In fact, the scene in which Arya is temporarily blind was shot on the steps of Carrer del Bisbe Cartañà. This is also where Arya’s training scenes with the Waif were filmed. In the series, this area represents one of the humble streets of Braavos where the Faceless Men put her to the test.

Church of Sant Martí Sacosta – Braavos Market (Arya’s Leap)

The scene in which Arya jumps and crashes into the market to escape from the Waif was filmed on the steps of the Church of Sant Martí Sacosta. She then tumbles down Pujada de Sant Domènec, the steep street that leads from the church towards the heart of Girona. As she continues running through a maze of narrow alleyways, she passes along Carrer de Sant Llorenç, a dark, atmospheric lane lined with arches and stone walls.

Arab Baths – Interior of Braavos (End of the Chase)

Arya eventually makes her way to the Banys Àrabs, Girona’s Arab Baths. Built in the late 12th century, they were used as public baths for at least two centuries. After a period of private ownership, they were restored by the Catalan government in the 1920s. This is where Arya’s chase by the Waif finally comes to an end.

Girona Cathedral – The Great Sept of Baelor

Girona Cathedral (Catedral de Santa Maria) was used as the Great Sept of Baelor in Season 6, and Margaery’s walk of atonement was filmed on the steps outside the cathedral, overlooking Plaça de la Catedral.

At the end of the season, the building is destroyed by Cersei Lannister using CGI. The season concludes with the Sept going up in green wildfire, as Cersei watches the devastation she has unleashed from a distant tower. Although the scene was heavily enhanced by the production team, the building is still clearly recognizable as Girona Cathedral.

We also recommend walking along Girona’s defensive city walls for fantastic panoramic views of the city, including the Cathedral, the Monastery, and the mountains that surround Girona.
