Best Day Trips from Barcelona: Discover Tarragona
Just over an hour away from Barcelona, Tarragona offers the perfect combination of ancient history, Mediterranean landscapes and authentic Catalan charm. Once the capital of Roman Hispania (under the name Tarraco), the coastal city is now one of Catalonia’s most beautiful destinations, where Roman ruins stand alongside medieval streets, sandy beaches and a lively food scene.
Whether you are looking for a cultural escape, a relaxing day at the seaside, or an alternative to the busiest attractions of Barcelona, Tarragona makes an excellent day trip or weekend getaway.
Why Visit Tarragona?
Tarragona is best known for its exceptional Roman heritage. Its archaeological ensemble was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 and includes some of the best-preserved Roman remains in Spain.
But Tarragona is so much more than an open-air museum. The city combines:
- Ancient Roman monuments
- A charming historic centre
- Mediterranean beaches
- Seafood restaurants
- Traditional Catalan festivals
- Beautiful coastal viewpoints
Its compact size also makes it easy to explore on foot, with many of the main attractions situated very closely together.
How to get to Tarragona from Barcelona
Tarragona is an easy destination for travellers who are staying in Barcelona.
By train
The most convenient option for most travellers is usually the train from Barcelona Sants station. Regional trains run between Barcelona and Tarragona many times a day, with the journey taking about an hour and a half, depending on the service. And once the train arrives, the station is close enough to walk into the city centre, but bear in mind that the route does include some uphill sections!
Tip: Be sure to get your train to Tarragona station, rather than Camp de Tarragona, as that station is far away from the city!
By car
If you’re a traveller who has hired a car for your trip, driving from Barcelona to Tarragona also only takes just over one hour, via the AP-7 motorway. Having a car on your visit to Tarragona will also make it easier to explore the nearby beaches, coastal villages, and the Roman sites outside of the city.
Things to do in Tarragona
1. Visit the Roman Amphitheatre

Built at the turn of the 2nd century AD, the Roman Amphitheatre of Tarragona is one of the city’s most impressive landmarks. Built overlooking the Mediterranean, it once hosted gladiator fights and a variety of public spectacles for thousands of audience members.
Its location makes it one of the most memorable (and beautiful) Roman sites in Catalunya: ancient ruins on one side, the sea on the other.
2. Walk Through the Roman Circus and Praetorium

The Roman Circus was one of the most important locations in ancient Tarraco; it was where horse and chariot races were held.
Nearby, the Praetorium Tower connected the lower city with the old Roman Provincial Forum. Climbing to the top will allow visitors to enjoy panoramic views over the city and the coastline.
Alltogether, the amphitheatre, circus and Praetorium create one of the best routes to understand the importance and history of Roman Tarragona.
3. Explore the Old Town

Tarragona’s historic area, known as Part Alta, is one of the nicest, most atmospheric areas of the city. Take your time and wander through the narrow streets. Have a nice rest in one of the small town squares and stop off in a cafe. Explore the historic buildings. Browse the local shops. Marvel at the impressive Tarragona Cathedral.
This area is perfect for a slow walk, specifically in the morning or late afternoon, when the streets are a bit quieter, and you can truly take in the sights and sounds of the city.
4. Enjoy the Views from the Balcó del Mediterrani

One of the most famous viewpoints of Tarragona is the Balcó del Mediterrani, situated at the end of Rambla Nova. From here, you can enjoy incredible views over the Mediterranean, the port, and the coastline.
A local tradition says that touching the iron railing of the balcony (“tocar ferro”) brings good luck, so don’t forget to do it during your visit!
5. Discover El Serrallo and Tarragona’s Seafood Cuisine

To get a taste of local life, head down to El Serrallo, the traditional fishing neighbourhood.
This area is known for its seafood restaurants and maritime atmosphere. It is the perfect place to enjoy dishes such as fresh fish, seafood rice, grilled prawns, and other traditional Catalan cuisine.
Tarragona’s location on the Mediterranean makes seafood one of the highlights of the local gastronomy.
Tarragona’s Best Beaches

One of Tarragona’s advantages is that you can combine sightseeing with time by the seaside.
L’Arrabassada Beach
The closest major beach to the city centre, L’Arrabassada is a popular choice, thanks to its golden sand, calm waters, and easy access.
Tamarit Beach
For a more scenic experience, visit Tamarit Beach, located near Tamarit Castle. Its natural surroundings and Mediterranean views make it one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
Cala Fondi (Waikiki Beach)
For travellers looking for more of a natural setting, Cala Fonda offers a quieter atmosphere, surrounded by a variety of plants and nature. It requires a short walk but rewards visitors with a more secluded beach experience.
Tarragona is a beautiful city, well worth visiting. It offers something different from Barcelona; a smaller, slower-paced city where Roman history, Mediterranean landscapes and local traditions come together.
For travellers interested in history, architecture, beaches, or authentic Catalan culture, Tarragona is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Barcelona.
