The Best Places to Experience Barcelona like a Local
For those who think that Barcelona locals spend their days wandering the Sagrada Familia, taking selfies on Barceloneta beach, and shopping on La Rambla, think again. Most locals tend to steer clear of the city’s busiest tourist spots, especially during the summer months. So, where do they go instead?
In this article, we’ll take you beyond the usual tourist trail and help you discover Barcelona like a local.
El Born
A neighbourhood of culture, great nightlife, and independent shops. El Born is where many locals head to get away from the busy La Rambla, enjoy dining in local restaurants as well as sampling some of the best tapas the city has to offer.
This neighbourhood is great for spending an afternoon getting lost in its winding streets, window-shopping in the nicest boutiques, and sipping on cocktails on Paseo del Borne.

City Tours by Locals
Who knows Barcelona better than those that live here? Many locals organise both bike and walking tours for those new to the city, offering them the chance to experience Barcelona from a completely different perspective. Along the way, they share local stories, hidden corners, favourite neighbourhood spots and useful tips that you’re unlikely to find in a typical guidebook.

Gràcia
Previously an independent village separate to the city of Barcelona, the neighbourhood of Gràcia was only merged into the city during its expansion at the end of the 19th century. Its inhabitants range from older Catalan residents to young hip artists looking for a more relaxing life away from the city centre.
In August, Gràcia celebrates its annual Festa Major de Gracia, seven days of non-stop partying, traditional processions and celebrations, as well as the iconic competition for best-decorated street.

Collserola
Barcelona is surrounded by the Collserola mountain range, a great place to go walking, cycling, running, hiking, or to have a picnic. Many spend their weekend up in the mountains, climbing to the top of Mount Tibidabo to take in the breath-taking views of the city, or to visit the glorious Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor church.

Markets
Skip the overpriced food and crowds of La Boqueria and head just a few minutes away to Santa Caterina Market. Located right by Barcelona Cathedral, this traditional market is a great alternative if you’re looking for a more local experience. Opened in 1848, it was Barcelona’s first covered market and is instantly recognisable by its colourful, wave-shaped mosaic roof.
One of Barcelona’s largest local markets, Sant Antoni brings together three different experiences: fresh food, clothing stalls and a Sunday book and collectors’ market.
If you’re exploring Eixample, Mercat del Ninot is a favourite among locals for fresh produce and quality food, offering a more authentic and relaxed market experience.

El Clot neighbourhood
El Clot is a calm, laid-back neighbourhood that’s perfect for wandering around and discovering a more local side of Barcelona, all under the gaze of the iconic Torre Glòries.
While you’re there, stop by Plaça del Mercat, wander through the charming Passatge Robacols and visit Parc del Clot, where old railway structures have been transformed into striking architectural features, including an aqueduct with a waterfall.

Jardins de Mossèn Costa i Llobrera (Cactus Garden)
Tucked away on Montjuïc, this 3.16-hectare garden is home to an impressive collection of cacti and succulents from around the world. Its hillside location also offers spectacular panoramic views over Barcelona’s coastline and port, making it one of the city’s most unique hidden spots.
